All About Da Vinci Greens

One of the most abundant and variegated colors in the natural world, green is necessary to almost any artist’s palette. Green, or the lack of one, is also one of the most personal colors in a palette. Many painters choose to mix all of their greens, but just as many prefer prepared (aka “tube”) greens for their convenience and consistency.

Greens in a landscape or object can range from light to dark, warm to cool, transparent to opaque, bright to muted, and every green in between. Da Vinci Paints has greens ready to tackle any subject that an artist desires, so let’s spring into green!

Gorgeous Greens with Da Vinci Watercolors

Watercolor artists often lean toward more transparent greens like Da Vinci Phthalo Green, Sap Green, or Hooker’s Green Light or Dark. However, more opaque greens like Da Vinci Chromium Oxide Green or Olive Green are also popular for their valuable service in mixing muted greens, calming reds, creating mossy browns and rich blacks, and stabilizing more transparent, bolder greens in a palette.

With the arrival of spring, many artists use Da Vinci Leaf Green to capture the landscape’s newly hatched deciduous trees that appear almost electric against post-winter’s browned background. Phthalo Green (Yellow Shade) is also an excellent spring-green option.

Denise’s Green
Alongside Da Vinci Paints, Artist Denise Soden developed a version of sap green that maintains a nice glow while avoiding the use of nickel azo yellow. Denise's Green can also be found in Denise's Earth Friendly Da Vinci Watercolor Palette.

Joyce’s Mother Green
Artist Joyce Hicks is known for her fresh, glowing landscapes, and Joyce's Mother Green is the foundation of the beautiful organic greens found in Joyce's artwork. It is also the base color in Joyce's Mother Green Da Vinci Palette and Signature Palette.

Paul Jackson’s Envy
Artist Paul Jackson is an internationally acclaimed watercolor artist with a wonderfully adventurous spirit. Envy is Paul's fun nickname for Phthalo Green, and we love it! See Paul's curated Wandering Watercolorist Palette that includes his custom color, Jackson Blue.

Gorgeous Greens with Da Vinci Oil Paints

From deep to vivid and transparent to opaque, Da Vinci Paints offers a wide range of artist greens in our professional oils. Dark yet transparent Phthalo Green is a perfect jumping off point for mixing nearly limitless greens, and it’s also useful for creating turquoises and teals, shadow colors and darks.

For a shortcut green with less tinting strength, Viridian Green or Permanent Green are great options. If you're itching to easily capture spring's ethereal, vivid greens, try Phthalo Yellow Green.

Landscape painters often prefer Chromium Oxide Green for its ability to mix a plethora of natural greens and also use it calm reds and create darks. Sap Green, a rich cool green, along with Olive Green, a dusky warm green, can be paired together to make two model greens for a palette. Add in Da Vinci Cinnabar Green, a muted yellow green, to create a green trio that’s perfect for any palette!
